Fantasy Hockey Planner - Week 8

by chewy 26. November 2010 09:39

Here is what you need to know as you set your fantasy hockey roster for week 8 (11/29 to 12/5):

Teams with 2 Games:  Buffalo, New Jersey

Teams with 4 Games:  Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota, NY Rangers, Phoenix, St. Louis

After just 2 games last week, Anaheim comes  back with 4 matches this week that should favor their fantasy players.  The Ducks have all 4 games at home, including a matchup with the Panthers.  The Rangers have a nice week ahead of them as well, with 3 of 4 at home, and two games against the Islanders.

The Devils and Sabres are both looking at light weeks with 2 games a piece.

Who's Hot

Everyone knows that Stamkos and Crosby are on a tear, with 14 points each in

that past two weeks.  Here are few other hot commodities you may have missed.

  • Ray Whitney (F-PHO) -  10 points in last 6 games
  • Mike Richards (F-PHI) - last 8 games: 6 goals / 5 assists
  • John-Michael Liles (D-COL)  - 4 goals and 7 assists in last 7 games
  • M.A. Fleury (G-PIT)  - 6 wins in last 7 games
  • Jarome Iginla (F-CGY) - 7 goals and 2 assists in last 6 games

Who's Cold

A few stars have disappointed in the past couple of weeks:

  • Spezza - 2 points in last 7 games
  • Getzlaf - 2 assists in last 5 games
  • Mikko Koivu - 2 points in last 7 games

Waiver Watch

Kevin Shattenkirk (D-COL)

The rookie Avalanche defenseman didn't crack the lineup until November, but he's

made an impact in recent weeks.  He has 2 goals and 3 assists in the past 4

games, and he's clocking 20+ minutes a night.

Derek Stepan (F-NYR)

After a hat trick on opening night, Stepan cooled off considerably.  He's back

now, with 8 points in his last 8 games.

Nikolai Kulemin (F-TOR)

3 goals and 1 assist in last 4 games.  Kulemin is getting a prominent role with

the Leafs and should easily top his career high of 36 points set last season.

Ondrej Pavelec (G-ATL)

Pavelec has been hot in recent weeks and is available in many leagues.  He's

allowed more than 1 goal just twice in his last 8 games.

Johan Hedberg (G-NJ)

Since Brodeur reaggrevated his elbow injury, Hedberg has the Devils on a short

winning streak.  He's allowed a total of 2 goals in his last three games.

Keep or Drop?

Fantasy owners are facing decisions on several injured or struggling players.  Here's my take on what to do.

Guillaume Latandresse (F-MIN)

If you were hanging on to Gui, it's time to let go.  After two surgeries this week, it appears likely he won't return this season.

James Wisniewski (D-NYI)

Wisniewski has started to show up more and more on the waiver front after a couple of dry weeks.  So, is it time to quit on him?  Not yet.  Right now, his +/- is hurting and probably won't get better soon; however, he will get you points.  He's still the top dog on the Isles defense and is out there for every second on the power play.  Give him more time.

Marc Savard (F-BOS)

Owners started tripping over themselves to pick up Savard whenever any sniff of good news come across regarding his headaches.  I've even seen some significant trade offers out there for the sidelined center.  Until he plays and puts together a few good weeks of production, I'm not wasting a roster spot.  Just look at how he performed last season coming off of various injuries.  Sad to say, but he's no longer a fantasy factor.
